Learn Installing A New Toilet

April 2nd, 2010 Scott Rodgers No comments

It is always better to replace an old and damaged toilet rather than repairing it. Installing a new toilet is not very difficult and do not require much time. In a toilet you can also get gaskets, washers and hardware for fitting the tank to the bowl.

For the installation of new toilet, you may require toilet bowl, toilet tank, toilet seat, two 1/4" bolts for bowl to flange, wax ring, 20" water supply with fitting at valve or floor connection, pair of channel pliers, bucket and screw driver.

Initially you need to cut down the water supply to the toilet and after that flush the toilet and clean out all the water that is left inside tank or bowl. Next take channel pliers or a small pipe wrench (8") to loose all the nuts connecting water line to ballcock valve.

After this, use crescent wrench to loosen two 1/4" nuts which connect the bowl to the floor flange. Once the nuts get loosened, you can easily remove your old toilet and start installing the new one.

Place these two 1/4" bolts at the side holes of the flange and bolt head in the flange. Apply old wax around these bolts and spot to keep the bolts straight. After this, place the new wax ring on flange.

Set new bowl only straight down so it centers on wax ring and both bolts come through holds on each side of bowl. Put metal washers and nuts on bolts and tighten it. Do not over-tighten as you can crack the bowl. Tighten these again after toilet is completely installed and filled with water.

After this, you need to put 2" rubber gasket on tank to fix it on bowl. Now pick the tank and fix the bowl over holes at place where bolts can easily go and get tightened. Tight all these bolts from inside the tank.

Use a large screw driver inside tank and a crescent wrench or end wrench to back up nut under bowl. Tighten with screw driver. Hook water supply to tank, turn on water, check for leaks and snug up the bolts holding bowl to floor and your installation is complete.

Application Of Roofing Felt Paper

March 3rd, 2010 Scott Rodgers No comments

All the roofing jobs are considered risky and complicating by the homeowners. However, there are a number of roofing tasks that fall under the apprehension of the beginners. By undertaking such tasks, the homeowners can serve two benefits. First, the cost of the project decreases considerably owing to reduced labor charges. Secondly, you gain some knowledge about the basic know-how of your roof architecture. Such information proves beneficial in cases of roofing emergencies.

Laying felt paper on your roof is one such task that calls for minimum of expertise and knowledge. However, you need to stay safe throughout the length of the project. Such safety would be rendered by the climbing gears, equipments and ropes. Besides the safety tools, the regular plumbing tools and supplies need to be purchased from the local home improvement store.

The sound condition of the different components of the roof needs to be inspected beforehand. The essential components of the roof such as drip edges, valleys, vents etc. must complement the installation of the felt paper. Furthermore, you can go a step ahead by applying a starter roll and ice guard.

The drip edge forms an important unit of the roof architecture. It is an aluminum sheet that covers the edges of the roof. It bears the fury of the external agents and prevents the roof edges from easy water accumulation.

Once the normal physical state of the drip edge is confirmed, move to the other associated preparations for the felt paper. A starter sheet needs to be layered on the roof. The starter sheet provides the required adhesiveness and efficiency to the roof spread.

Staple a roll of ice guard evenly on the roof surface. Some homeowners avoid the utilization of ice guard and instead, choose to felt the roof straightaway. However, a layer of ice guard is mandatory for the households located in hilly regions.

Once both these layers are laid on the roof, take out the roll of felt paper from the supply kit. Select one end of the drip edge and unroll the leading end of the felt paper roll. Continue unrolling the paper as you move towards the other end of the edge.

Repeat the same with the lane parallel to the first lane.

Features To Consider While Choosing Bathroom Countertop Material

March 3rd, 2010 Scott Rodgers No comments

If you need to choose a kitchen counter top then functionality is a big factor to consider but when you need to choose bathroom counter top functionality is not an important factor to consider. For a bathroom counter top the look and appearance of a counter top is more important to consider.

Along with appearance, price, maintenance and compatibility are also important factors to consider while choosing a bathroom counter top. Here we will discuss various materials available in market for making the bathroom counter top.

Choice of the material used to make bathroom counter top highly influences the looks of the bathroom. Such as stainless steel counter tops look very beautiful and also don't require much maintenance. Glass tiles or glass are also good but glass counter tops are more prone to get fingerprints.

Mostly granite, quartz, tiles and solid surface are used to make the bathroom counter tops. We will now talk about their features and ways of maintaining them.

Granite is long lasting, stain-resistant and a beautiful choice to be used as counter tops. Granite is gaining popularity to be used as a material for bathroom counter tops. It is very easy to maintain among all the natural stone materials. However, it is relatively expensive but it provides an elegant look that is incomparable. These counter tops should be cleaned with warm water and a liquid detergent. Avoid abrasive cleaners as they could scratch the surface and dull the finish.

Manufactured quartz looks little bit like limestone, granite or marble but it is more resistant to scratches and stains. It is made up of 90% quartz particles. Quartz is the best material to use if you are considering a counter top with a specialized edging. Counter tops made of it are durable, easy to clean and doesn't require sealing.

You can also use tiles for making bathroom counter tops. One drawback of using tile counter top is that grout in them requires more cleaning. Tiles are available in different sizes and big tiles come with less grout lines. Therefore, less cleaning will be required. Always go for colored grouts as less cleaning will be required in them. For cleaning of these tiles, any detergent can be used.

Solid surface is also a good option to be used as bathroom counter tops. They mainly look like natural stone. These counter tops are good in resisting mold or mildew. The surface in these counter tops is nonporous that can be easily cleaned.

Replace An Old Plumbing Trap Primer With A New One

January 2nd, 2010 Scott Rodgers No comments

Plumbing traps are the plumbing components that prevent waste gases from leaking out to the surroundings. The trap primer assists the trap by adding water to the trap so that a water-seal is enabled in the trap.

Frequently occurring faults in the trap setup calls for an immediate fixture or replacement of the trap primer. Hence, an inspection of the trap primer and the associated framework becomes mandatory.

Though at first, the task looks a bit complicated but it actually is minor enough to be handled by even a novice provided that he has the right logic and the required plumbing tools (pipe wrenches, hammers, screwdrivers etc).

Trap primers normally operate between the nearby sink and the trap. A water drainage from the sink would lead to an accumulation of water in the trap. Keeping this concept in mind, kick off the campaign by turning off the water supply(sink) or the main water supply. Move to the trap primer's site to locate the primer. An assistance from a plumber who installed it in the past may come handy. You may have to remove the drywall or some tiles to locate the trap primer. It would be in the form of a cylinder or a T-bar.

Dissociate the trap primer from the adjacent pipes with the help of cutters and pipe wrenches. Keep a bucket and a towel handy as leakage may be encountered while removing the primer. Take it to a hardware store and consult the salesperson regarding the new primer. Also ask if connectors and a pipe of some length would be required in order to compensate for the overall length of the pipe in the trap setup.

Put the new trap primer in place. If the pipes are of copper then solder it well else apply glue on the joints. Make sure that the primer is installed perfectly allowing no room for any leakage.

Now turn on the valve to render normal supply to the trap. Check whether trap primer is operating normally or not. If everything looks sound, place the drywall or the tiles back on the wall and cement/plaster them well.

As far as the maintenance of the trap primer is concerned, regular inspections are mandatory.
